Despite the fact that marijuana is legal in the state of Washington, underage use of the drug can cause permanent damage in the developing brain. Research indicates that teenage marijuana users process memory, emotions, and sleep patterns differently — and these changes can be long-lasting. It is still illegal for anyone under 21 for this reason.
Yes. About 1 in 6 people who start using marijuana in their teens will develop a marijuana use disorder. The risk increases with frequency of use and age of first use. Withdrawal symptoms include irritability, sleep difficulties, decreased appetite, anxiety, and cravings.
While it's unlikely to be fatal, it is possible to take too much marijuana, especially with edibles. Overconsumption can cause extreme anxiety, paranoia, rapid heart rate, nausea, and hallucinations. These symptoms can be very distressing and may require medical attention.
