For every suicide there are many more people who attempt suicide every year. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29 year olds.

These statistics are an important reminder that we must address mental health conditions like anxiety and depression as well as additional risk factors such as easy access to means for suicide, environmental factors, barriers to accessing mental health treatment.

While there is no way to predict suicide 100%, there are many warning signs that indicate a person is planning to harm themselves. Here are just a few:

  • Sleeping too little or too much

  • Giving away personal items

  • Talking about suicide

  • Making statements about feeling hopeless, helpless, or worthless

  • A deepening depression

  • Preoccupation with death

  • Taking unnecessary risks

  • Exhibiting self-destructive behaviors

  • Out of character behavior

  • A loss in interest in things one cares about

  • Visiting or calling people one cares about

  • Making arrangements or setting one’s affairs in order

  • Increasing use of drugs or alcohol

  • Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge

  • Talking about being a burden to others
